We run regular 5 week adult beginners courses for students with varying experience working with clay. Whether you are a complete beginner or have some experience, our beginners course will give you a good foundation for further work and access to our regular classes.
During the 5 week course we will explore various hand building techniques, have a go on the wheel and have a glazing session as listed below:
- Pinch pots with sculptural element. We will make a simple pinch pot as an introduction to the technique then we will jump in with our both feet and make a sculpture of an animal of your choosing using this technique.
- Coil pots. We will learn about coils, extruders and how to achieve shapes you desire by making a vasel using this technique.
- Slab building. We will build a rolled slab mug. Learn about the elements of the build and try a variety of slab decorating techniques.
- Throwing on a wheel. We will learn about centering on the wheel, opening our clay and throwing a pot or two.
- Glazing. During the glazing session we will overview glazes, oxides, glazing techniques, select and glaze a number of your completed works.
Occasionally we run day courses for intermediate level which include:
- Slab work and moulds
- Coloured slips and Sgraffito
- Recycling your clay – wedging, pugging and slip making
Frequently asked questions
Once I have booked will you contact me again before the event?
Yes, we will send an email to the address provided 10-12 days before. This will give you all the information you will need to know. Do add us to your contacts and check your junk mail folder if you don’t receive the email.
Can children attend?
At present our courses, workshop and classes are designed for adults only. Taster sessions are suitable for all ages. Children have to be accompanied by paying adult.
Do I need to bring anything?
No, we will supply aprons and all equipment and materials.
Will I be able to take my work home on the day?
All ceramic work must be bisque fired, glazed and then fired again. This is a long process so it will not be possible for students to take their work home on the same day. Your work will be ready to collect around 4-6 weeks after the date of your session. We will be in touch with you once your work is ready for collection.
We are limited for space and we are only able to keep work for 2 months after we have notified you that it is ready for collection. After that your work will be disposed or sold to aid the studio.
Will we be provided with refreshments?
Yes. All of our taster sessions include a tea break with a selection of coffee, teas and biscuits.
Are there any additional charges?
No, everything is included in the session price and there is no additional cost to fire your work.
Can I change the date of the course I have booked?
Yes, subject to availability. Please email us to request a change of date. You can see full details of our policies on our terms and conditions page.
What happens if I’m ill on the day or can’t attend for another reason?
Unfortunately we will not be able to offer you a refund or an alternative session without adequate notice as we will not be able to fill your space. However you can invite someone else to take your place. You can see full details of our policies on our terms and conditions page.
Is there free parking?
Yes. There is free parking directly outside the studio. We do ask that you are mindful when parking so that we can maximise on the space.
